So, you’ve decided you need a GPS tracking device. Great! Now, have you thought about whether or not you need a unit preinstalled on your car? If not, now’s the time to decide.
Granted, you’ll only have to make this choice if you’re in the market for a new car. Most carmakers offer GPS, also called a navigation system, as a preinstalled option on the model of your choice. If you’re not in the market for a new car, then chances are a portable system is right for you.
Advantages of Preinstalled “Nav” or GPS
Consumers who prefer their dashboards streamlined will appreciate the appearance of the preinstalled or factory navigation system, which is most likely covered under the car’s warranty. Many factory navigation systems offer voice-activated and steering wheel controls, making its operation seamlessly integrated with the vehicle.
Factory systems typically have larger screens than portable navigation systems, and because it’s part of the car, it’s almost impossible to steal. Factory GPS devices also help retain a car’s value.
Disadvantages of Factory GPS
Before you go running to your local dealer, consider the negatives of factory navigation systems, which are worth noting.
First, factory GPS devices are several times more expensive than portable models, with costs regularly exceeding $1,000. You may also have to purchase the top-of-the-line model before being allowed the option to purchase a factory GPS.
Second, unlike portable models that operate on battery life (handy when you’re walking around a strange but exciting city), you often can’t input directions while the car is moving – so much for your passenger entering an address. And the cost to update the GPS’ maps may be excessive.
Advantages of Portable Navigation Systems
Portable navigation systems are far more economical than factory installed GPS. In fact, many navigation systems that offer similar or better features retail for around $200, about 80 percent less than the cost of factory GPS.
Updating the GPS is also less expensive, and the screen itself may provide a clearer picture. Portable GPS owners can customize screen appearance including icons and colors.
You can use a portable model in places other than your car. And some portable GPS tracking devices offer enhanced features, such as MP3 players, Bluetooth capabilities and DVD playback.
Disadvantages of Portable GPS
Now you see it, now you don’t: portable GPS devices are far more prone to theft than factory-installed navigation systems. They’re clunky, too – no seamless integration – and some states limit how drivers can affix the devices to their windshield.
Not having steering wheel controls is a big minus for many drivers who have become accustomed to changing the radio and setting cruise control while on the go. Finally, some top-of-the-line models may wind up costing more than a factory-installed GPS.
Whichever you choose, you can rest easy knowing that soon you’ll always be the one who knows where to go.
